A Samhain Feast for Three: Bringing Old Traditions to Our Table 🎃🦊
Foxfire Kitchen | Foxfire and Freeways
Happy Samhain!
This year, I decided I wanted to start something a little different for our family. A tradition that hopefully will continue for many years to come, especially as Bug gets older.
And what better way to celebrate Samhain than with a homemade feast?
Now, anyone who knows me knows I love cooking, especially when I get to experiment in the kitchen. Sometimes I follow recipes, sometimes I change them, and sometimes I just wing it and hope for the best. Haha!
Tonight’s menu consisted of traditional Irish lamb stew, homemade Irish soda bread, and a moist apple cinnamon cake.
Everything made from scratch!
And of course, I finally got to put that beautiful cast iron cauldron I picked up at Costco during our travels through Iowa to good use. I knew there was a reason I needed that thing! 😂
Samhain has its roots in ancient Gaelic traditions, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It was also associated with remembrance of those who came before us, and many of its customs influenced later Halloween traditions.
While our dinner isn’t a recreation of an ancient Samhain meal, I wanted to bring a little of that old-world atmosphere into our home.
Nothing fancy. Just good food, a warm kitchen, and time together as a family.
Of course, the kitchen had its moments. The Irish soda bread dough decided it wanted to resemble biscuit mixture, and I had to make a few adjustments along the way.
But that’s cooking for you!
The best part of tonight isn’t necessarily what’s on the menu. It’s the beginning of something I hope Bug will remember growing up.
Maybe someday he’ll be standing beside me helping prepare the stew, kneading the bread, or sneaking apple pieces while we’re baking.
For now, it’s just me, Chris, and our little Viking enjoying our first family Samhain feast.
And I wouldn’t have it any other way. 🧡
To new traditions, old stories, and a little magic in the kitchen.
